Two days ago, Sunday 20 December 2015, marked the 100th anniversary of the last of the ANZACs evacuation from Gallipoli. It was heralded as a masterstroke in, what was otherwise, a disastrous campaign.

ABC News has published an article today titled, WWI anniversary: Soldier William Scurry honoured for devising drip rifle used in Gallipoli evacuation which describes what happened and why back in December 1915.

“A plucky young Lance Corporal, William Charles Scurry (and Buntie Lawrence), with a passion for inventions and modelling, devised the delayed action rifle, or drip rifle, that would allow soldiers to creep away without raising the suspicion of the Turkish enemy.”

Separately, there is also a 15 minute Australian War Memorial audio recording of an interview with Buntie Lawrence. The interview was recorded in 1982 and in that interview, Buntie even refers to returning to Gallipoli in 1965 for the 50th anniversary.
