Last night, AusCham’s National Board backed a proposal to shift AusCham’s Annual Ball, traditionally held in September, to November.

This year, the Year of the Horse, we will host a Melbourne Cup Ball. Well, actually, it will be the Melbourne Cup on Derby Day: Saturday, 1 November 2014 (as the Melbourne Cup is held mid week on the first Tuesday of the Month).

The Melbourne Cup is an iconic Australian event that is now in its 154th year. It is the Race that Stops a Nation – and not just in the state of Victoria which takes a public holiday for the occasion. Or because it’s the richest turf race in the world with a purse of AUD6.2million. Or because it’s attracting a greater number of international horses (the last three Cups have been won by international horses), trainers and owners.

Last year, for the business-minded, 104,000 attended the Race which attracted a TV audience in Australia of 2.31 million viewers. The vision was also beamed into 163 countries and territories around the world. The entire Melbourne Cup Carnival was responsible for $364.5 million of gross economic benefit to the Victorian economy.

But the Melbourne Cup is also about fashion, fancy hats, royalty, celebrities, yellow roses, Birdcages, entertaining VIP clients, promoting your company and of course, sweeps – and a bit of a flutter. Oh, and also having an unbelievably fun time.

What time will it be? As one person remarked recently, “You go to the races during the day.” Giddy up!
