Chefs from Caravelle Saigon bested 139 of Vietnam’s top culinary teams to claim the trophy at the Golden Spoon Awards 2014.

Led by Chef Tran Thai Bao, Caravelle’s three-man teamed out-cooked 14 other competing teams, many from four- and five-star hotels across the country, to nab the top prize at the contest finale, held in the southern province of Binh Duong on Dec. 10, 2014.

Dedicated to promoting traditional Vietnamese cuisine, the Golden Spoon Awards second annual competition kicked of in May 21, with qualifying rounds taking place in 10 locations nationwide. The six-month-long contest came to a close with a black box challenge, wherein chefs were given just 60 minutes to prepare a four-course meal for four people, using a mystery ingredient revealed at the start of the time.

Runner-ups for the trophy hailed from the Hyatt Regency Danang, First Hotel HCMC, The Grand Ho Tram Strip and Sunway Hotel Hanoi.

The 2014 Golden Spoon Awards were organised by porcelain maker Minh Long Co. and the Business Studies & Assistance Center, with support from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) together with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
