Vietnam remains Australia’s second largest market for live animals and an important alternative to Indonesia which continues to face commercial and political uncertainty. The Vietnamese market for Australian cattle started 4 years ago and grew rapidly to peak in approximately 360,000 head of cattle in CY 2015. Since then the trade has stabilised and is now going through a stage of maturing.
As an industry service body, MLA runs a program funded by Australian red meat producer levies (farmers) (through MLA) and levies from livestock exporters (through Livecorp).
Over the last 3 years MLA has had a permanent presence in Vietnam working to service the needs of Australian cattle exporters. The rapid growth of the Australian export industry to Vietnam has resulted in a massive shift from an industry (cattle industry) reliant completely on trading cattle to one with a commercial platform. This transition has been greatly assisted by the presence of MLA in market and development would not be as rapid without their ongoing support of industry development at all levels on both the Australian and Vietnamese sides.
