About

Syd Giller was educated at St Andrew’s College, Christchurch and at the University of Otago in New Zealand, graduating BSc (Industrial Psychology major) followed by a post-graduate year in marketing studies. In 1976 he was employed by a Wilson Neill Ltd and initiated horticultural products exports to Asia (in particular Japan), North America, Western Europe and in 1981 he established first contacts in the Middle East. In 1983 Syd was recruited by the New Zealand Dairy Board (now Fonterra) as the first Marketing Manager of the Milkfat Division and in 1986 was posted to Bahrain as Regional Director, Middle East for the New Zealand Dairy Board and Managing Director of New Zealand Milk Products (Middle East) EC. In this role he one year spent more time travelling in the Middle East than resident in Bahrain, and enjoyed the opportunity in these four years especially to develop a thorough knowledge of the region, its peoples and business. In 1989 he established Austanz International Pty Ltd in Melbourne, Australia with the purpose of exporting Australian products of excellence to the Middle East and Japan. Austanz Int’l represents a number of companies in these countries, has consulted to a number of companies in respect of specific projects, and has established its own brands for food and beverage products in the Gulf manufactured in Australia, Thailand, Italy, Germany and Ireland. Additionally, marine products are traded from South Africa to the USA. He was co-opted to the Middle East section Organising Committee of the Australian Government sponsored National Trade and Investment Outlook Conference ’94. Syd was the National Chairman of the Australian Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. [AACCI] for 7 years, and Chairman of the Victoria Chapter. In various AACCI capacities, he has accompanied the Australian Ministers for Trade on several visits to the Middle East, and chaired the Australian Delegations for the Trade Committee of the Australia/United Arab Emirates and Australia/Saudi Arabia Joint Ministerial Consultations. Syd has been a Board Member of the Council for Australian-Arab Relations (a Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade), and Chairman of the Australia Oman Business Council.
