The Rapido 60′ (18m) is the world’s fastest cruising production trimaran – and Rapido Trimarans is Australian-owned and built in HCMC. And they are a member of AusCham.

Currently, the first-ever Rapido, which was launched just a month ago, is in Phuket (Thailand) where it is undertaking sea trials.

AusCham’s Executive Director, Phil Johns, was a guest of Rapido Trimarans from 24-26 June 2016. With one of Rapido Trimarans co founders, Paul Koch, they went sailing for three days in the waters near Phuket (including Phi Phi Island).

The Rapido was designed by Morelli & Melvin – the designers behind Adventurer, Steve Fossett; America’s Cup team, BMW ORACLE Racing; and multihull builder, Corsair Marine International (previously owned by Paul Koch).

Phil Johns said that the Rapido is a stunning example of an international company building a genuinely world class product with a highly skilled workforce in Vietnam.

“The size and strength of that 25m carbon mast is breathtaking. The surface area of the mainsail alone is 125sqm – that’s a 3-bedroom apartment!

“And the waters off Phuket are fairly breathtaking as well.”

*Note: Phil covered all of his expenses travelling to/from Phuket. Time away from the AusCham office was taken as annual leave.
