CON DAO, Vietnam – October, 2019 – 2019 marks a wonderful milestone for Six Senses Con Dao as from the beginning of the year, there are in total 2,272 baby turtles hatching out of the eggs and making their way back to the ocean in a coordinated effort. Remarkably, on the first day of October, 6 nests hatched nearly at the same time with more than 400 hatchlings released, indicating a strong growth of 73 percent compared to the same period last year. 2019 is the second year this ambitious project has been run in collaboration with Con Dao National Park and the above figure is a strong statement proving the success of this project.
It is a natural process that after a female sea turtle comes to the shore to nest, she will return to the sea, leaving her nest and the eggs to develop on their own. That’s why a mama sea turtle will carefully choose a place that is well-preserved and lack of lamplights to lay eggs. Thanks to Mother Nature’s sweet favor, Con Dao islands turn out to be the perfect choice. Comprising 16 mostly uninhabited islands and islets with more than 80 percent of the land area is National park, the archipelago offers a sublime and magnificent landscapes, all are well-preserved and protected. Untouched by the development of main land, here is one of a few destinations left in Vietnam where provides an ideal nesting condition for the endangered green sea turtles.
Having realized the potential harm coming from the outside environment, Six Sense Con Dao decided to restore its beach to optimize eggs laying for green turtles and decrease the mortality rate of turtle hatchlings. Since the temperature of the sand in which the eggs are buried in, plays a key role in deciding the gender of a turtle egg and influences the hatchling performance, the resort’s incubation is believed to provide the best nesting condition by allowing temperature to be controlled and adjusted. Hence, a higher survival ratio will be captured. The resort also uses the dimmed light system in each villa and residence to reduce the brightness and create a turtle-friendly environment. This results in the fact that there have been three mama turtles coming to lay eggs right on the resort’s shore from the beginning of the year. Currently, there are 14 nests with 2,500 eggs that are protected in the incubation center. With an average successful hatching rate of 80 percent, Six Senses Con Dao expects to welcome more than 2,000 hatchlings from now until the end of the year.
