About
Ian Betts is Hill & Associates' Regional Director for Southeast Asia, responsible for Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Ian has led numerous investigations and crisis and security engagements in Indonesia and Thailand with more than 20 years of security and consulting experience in Asia.
Ian worked in business consultancy between 1996 and 2006, joining Hill & Associates in 2007 to lead the company’s Risk Intelligence Service in Indonesia and establishing the company’s Viewpoint Report Series, earning him a reputation as a prominent researcher on country and political risk. Ian served as Country Manager for Hill & Associates in Indonesia from 2009 to 2014, relocating to London in 2015 as Global Head of Risk Analysis for G4S Risk Consulting, leading a team of analysts there alongside Hill & Associates’ own analysts in Asia. In 2017 he returned to Southeast Asia to lead the company’s operations in Thailand, Vietnam, and the broader Mekong sub-region. As Service Line Leader for Risk Intelligence, he manages a team of analysts throughout the region.
Ian graduated from Exeter University with a Master’s degree in International Studies, majoring in good governance, political Islam and political risk analysis. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in the Humanities (Politics and Philosophy) and is certified in Intractable Conflict Training, Comparative Community Development, and Islamic Studies. He is a member of ASIS and the ISRM and a certified trainer (UK). Ian speaks fluent English, Danish and Indonesian.
