First, Fill Your Own Cup!

First, Fill Your Own Cup!
Fill your own cup to overflowing before you do anything else.

When I was living back in Sydney, Australia, over a decade ago now, I was coaching young mothers on health and wellness.

They would come into my practice with low energy, overweight, stressed, just to name a few of their challenges. They came to see me because they were looking for positive change in their lives.

The conversation would start with a list of their challenges and problems of which we mentioned a few above. These young mothers were really stressed, raising children, maintaining the house, having a part-time, in some cases a full-time job, as well as looking after their husband. It was a tough time in their lives and as a result, their health and wellbeing were taking a hit.

To help them I would share with them the practical things to do, to start to reduce their symptoms and eradicate the cause of the problem. As soon as I mentioned going to the gym, taking time out to relax, they would immediately fire back at me with, I HAVE NO TIME!

I have no time, I’m already too busy doing everything and I’m bankrupt in time.

Fill Your Cup First

When your cup is empty and you continue to give, you’re heading down the path of physical and mental bankruptcy.

If your cup is empty you are no good to your children, partner, employer, or anyone else for that matter. You are angry, short-tempered, frustrated, have low energy, poor health, even depression. How can you be of any value to anyone in this state? Those mothers who have been here, will know exactly what I mean, don’t you!

Mom, your job is to fill your cup first, your job is to look after number one before anyone else. Now you may think this is selfish to look after yourself first, and it is. If you don’t do it, what’s the alternative? Ask all the husbands out there, they will tell you all about the alternative.

Now, this is not just for moms out there. This is true for all of us. When we look after ourselves, fill our cup so we are taken care of, we can then selflessly serve everyone else. It’s absolutely imperative we fill our cups to overflowing before we serve others.

Daily Schedule

In my daily schedule (see it here: Power Move Habits) I make sure that I look after myself first thing in the morning. I exercise, journal, meditate, feed my mind, feed my body, all before 8 am when I arrive at my office.

Now my cup is full and I can serve my clients 100%, all day long. When my cup is full, I can add so much more value, than if it was half full, or empty, God forbid!

We need to be selfish for our families, for our employers, for our customers, so we can add as much value in every interaction as possible. So get the idea out of your head that we need to serve others before we serve ourselves.

Go Fill Your Cup, NOW!

Please go fill your cup now. Look after yourself first. Pay attention to your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing. You already know what to do, Just Do It!

When you’re serving the world with an overflowing cup, watch the magic show up in your life in how you feel, perform, and the results you generate. You will wonder why you never thought of doing this before.

Oprah Winfrey said that one of the very first things she encourages people to do before all else is to FILL YOUR CUP TO OVERFLOWING. This is one of the things she does and it’s one of her primary actions before anything else.

Go fill your cup NOW!
